The park is known not only for its myriad species, but also for its abundance of large animals such as the Asian elephant and its wild cattle. It is home to the rare gaur, the largest bovine in the world, and the smaller banteng. At some point in the past, the gaur and the banteng crossed, mated and bred in a freak of nature. MOUNT ST. HELENS - LIFE FROM ZERO
When the mountain roared, life vanished in an instant. But from the ashes of Mount St. Helens, a new world began—where every sprout is a miracle and every day is a second chance.
On 18 May 1980, one of the greatest natural disasters of our time struck the north-west of the United States. Mount St. Helens exploded, hurling millions of tonnes of molten rock into the sky. A wave of hot gases swept over the forests, wiping out all life. In seconds, a lush mountain landscape became a barren desert—lifeless as Mars.
Could nature ever recover from such devastation? How would life return, and how long would it take? For 22-year-old biology student Charlie Crisafulli, the eruption turned the mountain into a living laboratory. Over three decades, he and his colleagues watched as life crept back—tiny plants, insects, and animals reclaiming the wasteland. This is the astonishing story of nature’s resilience at ground zero, where every green shoot is a triumph against the odds.
